On "Rooms by the Sea" by Edward Hopper

This picture is a paining" Rooms by the Sea" by Edward Hopper. It is a oil painting and done on canvas in the year 1951. It´s size is about 75 x 100cm. Of course strictly speaking it is just its copy.
What do I see in the picture? If I chose this picture, I had some reason to choose it. It would be easy to see what is in it. But I didn´t choose it. It was given to me almost by chance. Usually I don´t look into any picture, which I don´t like or which is not interesting to me.
But this time I didn´t know what to see in it. What should I do with it? I couldn´t do anything.
Soon I started to check up who was Edward Hopper. What else had he done? He was almost unknown to me that time. I knew just his name but nothing else. I started to read some books on him and his pictures.

Edward Hopper was born in New York in the year 1982 and he died in the year 1967. He was almost the same age of Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso and Marsel Duchamp. He studied in New York Art School, when he was young. He sold his painting first time, when he was thirty years old, and he sold next painting 12 years later, when he was 42 years old. In the same year he quit other job and started to live as a painter. His water color paintings were sold somehow. After this time he began to become famous gradually.

When I noticed he had been an unknown artist, I felt," It is interesting. He was as unknown as me at least until my age." However I still didn´t know what I should see in the picture. I started to check the composition of forms and colors. At same time I felt I was doing something wrong. I wanted to see something else.

The picture looks strange, unrealistic. It looks like a picture by a surrealist artist. It was my first impression. I thought" Probably I should start to look into it with this point. Why does this picture look unrealistic? Why do I feel strange in this?"

SEA OUT SIDE OF A DOOR
How can you see the sea outside of a door? It isn´t possible the sea is just outside of a door. When I started to read on his life, I noticed that he had a summer cottage by sea. It is possible that he saw it through the door really or he saw it nearly like this. Anyway you can see like this from a house-like-boat or from a house, which is just beside sea. In this case the view is not unrealistic but just normal.
However we don´t expect any sea in the other side of a door. We expect its yard or garden and then houses of neighbors. We expect the scenery changes little by little, not so suddenly. In this picture we need at least seashore between the door and the sea so we feel just normal.
So this picture isn´t unrealistic at all exactly speaking. But we still feel strange, when we see it.

EMPTY ROOM
The room is empty. No one is there, even no furniture in it. What does he want to show us? I looked into many pictures by him through books and I got an idea, that important subject in his pictures is buildings and rooms, even thought there were people.
I think he was such kind of a person, to whom a stage is more important than an actor. A stage stay unchanged but actors change. Even more the stage stay, when the plays change from one to another. In buildings stories of people go one after another like plays in theater. In this room a story has gone and another story is coming.
By chance I read in a book he had said" The interior itself was my main interest - simply a piece of New York, the city interests me so much." Of course he didn´t mean this painting, but I felt I was right.
An empty room itself is not strange at all. When we have gone to work, the house stays in empty. It happens in every day's life. But we don´t go to theater to look an empty stage. We go to see a play. This time we want to see a play in the picture, but he just left the room empty.

ROOM OUT OF PERSPECTIVE

There is something wrong in the shape of the room. I examined the line perspective of the room and searched the vanish point of it. I found the perspective of this picture is very wrong. How about is it in other pictures? I checked up many pictures.
The result was:
In many cases it looks like so that the perspective didn´t interest him much. He used it roughly correctly but not exactly at all. He did it almost correctly in one picture and much wrong in another picture. Even in one picture you can find both right and wrong perspective.
I found something interesting. He used perspective wrong in some pictures. The roofs of rooms have usually higher vanish point than the floors, although they must be only one in the same point. And the buildings on the right side have the vanish point in righter side and the buildings of the left side have it in more left side.
In this picture the frame of the door has the vanish point in the right side, the shadow of the frame has it in the left side and the edge of the wall has it far away in the left side. Of course all of them must be one point in the same place.
What did he mean by this? Has he done this on purpose? Or just by chance? I drew it correctly after the picture.

WRONG SHADOW
When I was checking the perspective of the room, I found something wrong in the shadow. At the same time it looks quite normal. "Is there any secret in it?" I thought. I tried to make it clear what is wrong, but I could not find anything wrong. At last I got an idea the shape of shadow is wrong. The door must have five corners, if the shadow is correct. I took a paper and made a small model of it. The sun came through. The frames of the door, but the shadow didn´t come like this. When I knew the secret of the shadow, it wasn´t difficult make it correct.
I drew it correct after the picture and found it too normal. It looks like something standard picture which anyone can make.

Questions rise: Did he know what he did with the shadow? Did he done this on purpose? And why?

Again I started to check up his paintings. This time I checked only shadows. It looks like so he painted shadows carelessly in many pictures. But in a picture I found a woman seated down on a bench in a train. Light come through windows. The shadow of the bench is on a floor but the shadow of the woman is not there.
Did he do it on purpose? Why did he do it? Or did it happen just by chance? Just he forgot it to paint.
And how about in this picture? He had a long career by the time. He might know it. Did he wants to test the people, who came to look? Do they know this trick? Do critics, who always show that they know all, notice this?
However he was almost seventy years old this time. I think any opinions of others didn´t interest him anymore. No one could influence on his art. He didn´t tried to do on others either. Probably he just wanted much sun light onto the room and this worked very well.
And I red he was saying" The purpose of this picture is to paint the sun light on a wall of a house."
I think the correct shape of the shadow didn´t interest him at all.

WHAT WE SEE IN ART
When I started to try to understand the picture, I didn´t know what to do. By now I know much about the picture and the painter, I like it much now. Still I don´t know what I should see in the picture. I feel that I tried to be a detective and I enjoyed it much. That is all what I did.
Next time I want to make it clear what art really is? Then I can see art better, I hope.

- HOPPERIN "HUONEITA MEREN RANNALLA" -

Kuva on Edward Hopperin maalaus "Huoneita meren rannalla", se on öljymaalaus ja tehty kankaalle vuonna 1951, sen koko on n.74x102cm. Tarkasti sanottuna tämä on sen painokuvasta otettu värikopio.
Mitä minä katsoisin kuvassa. Jos olen valinnut tämän siksi, että tykkään tästä, asia voi olla selkeämpi. Mutta kuvan valinta ei ole minun, se oli annettu minulle katsottavaksi eräässä tilaisuudessa. Minä en katso yleisesti sellaisia maalauksia, joista en tykkää tai joka ei kiinnosta minua. Mutta tässä tapauksessa en tiedä, mitä minun pitäisi katsoa? Olen täysin avuton.

Edward Hopper on syntynyt New Yorkissa v.1882 ja kuoli v.1967. Hän oli melkein saman ikäinen kuin Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso ja Marsel Duchamp. Hän opiskeli New Yorkin taide koulussa nuorena. Hänen maalaus tuli myydyksi ensimmäiseksi 30 vuotinana, toinen maalaus tuli myydyksi vasta kun hän oli 42vuotias. Samana vuonna hän lopetti muita hommia ja aloitti elämään taidemaalarina - vesi-värimaalaukset ovat tulleet kaupaksi. Sen jälkeen hän tuli kuuluisammaksi vähitellen.

Huomasin, että hän oli melkein tuntematon taiteilija nuorempana. Minun ikäisenä häntä ei tunnettu yhtään paitsi lähipiirissä. Se kiinnosti minua. "Hän oli yhtä tuntematon kuin minä. Hän voi olla hyvä taiteilija," aloitin miettimään.
Silti en tiennyt, mitä pitää katsoa. Olen aloittanut tutkimaan kuvan sommittelua, mutta tiesin, että kuvan sommittelu ei ollut hänen tarkoitus, sommittelusta ei tule mitään selville.

Kuva näyttää oudolta, epätodennäköiseltä, kuten surrealistin kuva.
Ajattelin, että ehkä minun kannattaa miettiä tätä asiaa, mistä syystä kuva on outo. Mistä kummallinen tunnelma johtuu?

MERI OVEN ULKOPUOLELLA
Voiko olla meri oven ulkopuolella? Epätodennäköinen tilanne!
Kun tutkin Hopperin elämää, huomasin, että hänellä oli kesäasunto meren rannalla. Sieltä jostakin huoneesta voisi näkyä meri melkein samalla tavalla kuin tässä kuvassa. Muutenkin asuntoveneestä tai vastaavasta asunnoista, voi näkyä meri tällä tavalla normaalina näköalana. Tässä tapauksessa kuva on hyvin todennäköinen.
Mutta me emme odota merta oven toisella puolella. Me odotamme pihaa ensin ja sitten naapurin taloja tai puutarhaa. Maisema muuttuisi asteittain, ei niin radikaalisti. Tässä kuvassa ainakin ranta tarvittaisiin oven ja meren välissä, niin että tulisi mukavampi olo.
Siis tämä kuva ei ole epätodennäköinen tarkasti sanottuna, mutta sen tunnelma on outo.

TYHJÄ HUONE
Kuvan keskellä on tyhjä huone, ei ihmisiä eikä edes huonekaluja.
Mitä sitten hän haluaa esittää?
Olen katsonut muita Hopperin maalauksia kirjoista.
Ja tuli mieleen se, että Hopperin maalauksissa tärkein aihe on rakennus ja sen sisätila, vaikka mukana onkin ihmisiä ja ne ovat myös tärkeitä.
Minusta hän on sellainen henkilö, jolle näyttämö on tärkeämpi kuin näyttelijä. Näyttämö on pysyvä ja näyttelijät vaihtelevat. Näyttämössä menee esityksiä toisesta toiseen. Rakennuksessa menee ihmisten tarinoita toisesta toiseen kuten teatterin esitys.
Tässä kuvassa on kaksi huonetta, joissa on mennyt tarinoita ja joissa odotettaan seuraavaa esitystä.

Ja sattumalta luin hänen sanoneen,"The interior itself was my main interest - simply a piece of New York, the city interests me so mach." vaikka hän ei tarkoittanut tästä maalauksesta, vaan toisesta, minua vahvisti se, että olen oikeassa.

Tyhjä huone sinänsä ei ole kumma. Kun me menemme töihin, asuntomme jää tyhjiin. Se on arkielämässä. Mutta emme käy tyhjää näyttämöä katsomassa, vaan menemme katsomaan esitystä. Tässäkin haluamme katsoa esityksen. Mutta hän näytti vain tyhjää näyttämöä.

VINO HUONE
Aloitin tarkastamaan huoneiden muotoja. Se näyttää vinolta.
Sitten tutkin viivaperspektiiviä ja etsin häivytyspisteitä. Ja huomasin, että ne pisteet ovat täysin väärin. Entä muissa kuvissa? Olen tutkinut kymmeniä Hopperin maalauksia.

Tulos oli:
Useimissa tapauksissa häntä ei kiinnostanut viivaperspektiivi. Joskus se on oikein suurin piirtein, joskus kokonaan väärin, tai osittain oikein ja osittain väärin.
Mutta muutamassa maalauksessa hän on käyttänyt viivaperspektiiviä järjestelmällisesti väärin.

Hänellä oli tietty väärinkäyttö menetelmä:
Yläpuolella oleva katon häivytyspiste on korkeammalla kuin alapuolella oleva lattian häivytyspiste, vaikka niiden pitäisi olla samassa pisteessä.

Tässä kuvassa tapahtuu seuraavalla tavalla:
Oven aukolla on häivytyspiste oikealla puolella, ja varjolla, joka on oven vasemmalla puolella, on häivytyspiste myös vasemmalla puolella. Seinän reunan häivytyspiste on vielä vasemmammalla puolella ja tietenkin kaapin häivytyspiste on mahdottomalla paikalla.
Vaikka kaikki pisteiden pitäisi olla samassa paikassa.

Onko Hopper tehnyt tätä tarkoituksella?
Onko tämä vain tajuton taipumus?
Vai vain sattuma?
Korjasin kuvan oikealla perspektiivillä.

VÄÄRÄ VARJO
Kun olen tarkistamassa kuvan perspektiiviä, huomasin, että varjossa on jotakin outoa. Toisaalta se näyttää luonnolliselta. Onko siinä jokin salaisuus? Yritin korjata varjoa perspektiivin avulla. Mutta en pystynyt siihen mitään.
Mietin ja mietin ja sitten yhtäkkiä tuli ajatus, että varjon muoto on väärin. Ovella on viisi kulmaa, jos maalauksen varjo on oikein!
Otin paperin ja tein huoneen pienoismallin. Ja aurinko paistaa ovesta. Varjo ei tullut kuten maalaus. Kun sain varjon salaisuuden, oli helppo korjata se.
Korjasin sen ja tuli tavanomainen kuva.

Tuli kysymys:
Tekikö Hopper näin tahallaan?
Miksi hän teki sitä tarkoituksella?
Vai eikö hän tiennyt sitä yhtään?

Taas aloitin tutkimaan varjoja hänen maalauksissa. Näytti siltä, että hän maalasi varjoja huolimattomasti. Eräässä maalauksessa nainen istuu junan penkillä ja valo tulee ikkunasta. Penkillä on varjo mutta naisella ei.
Oliko se tarkoituksena vai vahinko?
Entä tässä tapauksessa?
Hän on kokenut maalari, hän tiesi sen varmaankin.

Halusiko hän koettaa katsojaa, huomaako katsoja virhettä tässä kuvassa? Huomaako kriitikot virhettä?
Toisaalta hän oli melkein 70vuotias silloin. Häntä ei kiinnostaa toisten mielipiteet. Toiset eivät voi vaikuttaa häneen eikä hän yritä vaikuttaa toisiin.
Hän halusi vain leveää auringon valoa huoneeseen ja ratkaisu onnistui. Hopper sanoi: "Pyrkimyksenäni oli maalata auringon valo talon seinällä." Hänelle varjon muoto ei ollut tärkeä.

MITÄ TAITEEN YMMÄRTÄMINEN ON?
Kun olin yrittämässä tutkia kuvaa, mieleeni nousi kysymys,
Mitä minä olen tekemässä? Yritänkö minä ymmärtämään Hopperia, maalausta vai yritänkö nauttia salapoliisin roolia? Kaikki asiat tulivat minulle yhtä aikaa ja lisäksi sekaisin. Lopuksi jäi suuri kysymys.

Mitä katsotaan taiteessa?
